When I first got my hands on the Model Context Protocol (MCP)<\/strong>, I felt like I\u2019d unlocked a superpower \u2014 finally, a way to connect AI directly to tools like Google, Notion, and Slack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that excitement quickly turned into some very expensive<\/em> and very humbling<\/em> lessons. The truth? MCP is powerful, but it\u2019s also a minefield if you\u2019re not careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what I wish I had known before diving in \u2014 straight from my own trial (and error) log.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The \u201cVague Prompt\u201d Token Explosion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Early on, I asked the AI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without a URL, the AI decided to go full detective \u2014 crawling through my entire workspace, testing method after method.
Cost:<\/strong> 80,000 tokens in one go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I simply gave it the exact page link, the cost dropped to 7,000 tokens. That\u2019s over 90% saved<\/strong> just by being precise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Give the AI exact context \u2014 URLs, IDs, filters \u2014 so it doesn\u2019t go on an expensive scavenger hunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The Data Access \u201cWhoops\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I once connected MCP with a token that had full<\/em> access to my Notion and Slack.
One wrong move, and the AI could\u2019ve pulled data from everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Follow least privilege<\/strong> \u2014 grant only what\u2019s needed. Never reuse dev tokens in production, and keep scopes as narrow as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. The Multi-App Integration Rabbit Hole<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Integrating MCP with Slack, Notion, and Google Drive sounded simple\u2026 until I mixed up token formats and got stuck regenerating credentials. Over. And over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson:<\/strong> Write down your setup steps. Store them securely. Test with small queries before committing to big workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. The \u201cLocal MCP\u201d Reality Check<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Local MCP hosting felt great for security \u2014 my data stayed on my machine. But non-technical teammates hit a wall the moment npx entered the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson:<\/strong> If your team isn\u2019t all tech-savvy, either create a bulletproof installation guide<\/p>\n\n\n\n
